Ming Coffee Table
Crystal Dynamics 2005 Alpha 'staches (horror)
The first and last time I ever grow one. The entire team had a bet with management that if 3/4 the team (including women in the count) would grow moustaches and keep them on throughout Alpha, then the General Manager would have to grow a moustache (style of the team's choosing) and cannot tell anyone why he's wearing said moustache. There was a board made with the approved moustache styles (so no one could skate by with a goatee... chin hair not allowed). No dictators and no fictional characters (sorry, Ming and Adolf). They can't look cool. We had the Magnum, the Lemmy, the Sam Neill (basically, a Magnum that grows over your lips), the Waters, etc. I tried the Waters but... to keep it thin but looking like more than the low density of hairs it actually is you have to pencil it in. And it's hell to maintain. Let me tell you, 5 o'clock shadow OVER the thin Waters 'stache looks randomly horrible.
Equally horrible was when a group of us went out to lunch. A whole table full of guys in moustaches. It looked weird.
Over the course of the bet it expanded to include the Board of Eidos in England, who thought it was hilarious and that we (the team) couldn't get enough people to win the bet. We won. We had them all grow the Lemmy.
On the last day of the Alpha 'stache, the entire moustached team went to Sears Family Photo Studio in Mountain View to get group and individual photos taken. 20ish dudes in moustaches milling around. I left CD to return to Planet Moon just a few weeks later, but I heard they hung the framed photos on the wall beyond reception and also had coffee cups made for the common kitchen, one mug per portrait.
Anyway. There's a wallet-sized individual portrait of me, horrible, that Rae carries around in her wallet and gleefully whips out every now and then to horrify the both of us :-E

Tamra and I bought a banged up Ming style coffee table several months ago at an estate sale. It took me about 3 months of sunny days to refinish it, or in real time about 5 sessions of work. I loved the meditation and thinking about giving it to him; how he'd like it. He did. Very much.
